Philip Seymour Hoffman ( Fairport, New York State , July 23, 1967 - New York, February 2, 2014 ) was an American actor.
He began acting in television in 1991 and made her film debut the following year. It was gradually recognized for his work as a supporting actor in films like Scent of a Woman ( 1992) , Boogie Nights (1997 ) , The Big Lebowski ( 1998) , Magnolia (1999 ) , The Talented Mr. Ripley ( 1999) , Almost Famous ( 2000) , 25th Hour (2002 ) , Punch -Drunk Love (2002 ) and Cold Mountain (2003 ) .
In 2005 , Hoffman played Truman Capote in the biopic Capote, whose performance received several awards including the Oscar for best actor. He was also nominated for an Oscar for his supporting roles in Charlie Wilson 's War ( 2007) and Doubt (2008 ) . Other films were critically acclaimed Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007 ), The Savage Family (2007 ), Synecdoche, New York (2008 ),
Moneyball (2011) and The Ides of March ( 2011). In 2012 he received the prestigious award for best male performance of the International Venice Film Festival, in addition to the Critic's Choice for Best Actor for his acclaimed performance in " The Master" .
Hoffman was also an accomplished actor and theater director. In 1995 , he joined the LAByrinth Theater Company, and has directed and acted in several Off- Broadway productions. He was nominated for Tony Awards for his work in two Broadway plays: True West (2000) and Long Day 's Journey into Night (2003).
